The Colosseum also known as The Coliseum or Flavian Amphitheatre is located in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. See Mapquest for directions.
The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre built of concrete and stone and was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is situated just east of the Roman Forum and construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 70 AD and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir Titus.
The Colosseum could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Both prisoners and war victims met their death at the jaws of lions and tigers. In the vaults below the Colosseum is where the gladiators awaited to fight and prisoners waited for their time to die in the most horrific ways while Romans placed their bets on the days competition.
Many visitors have experienced cold spots or have been touched or pushed. Many have heard whispering in their ears. Even the night workers of the Colosseum have reported sounds of swords clashing, people crying, and the roars of lions. Some have even seen ghostly apparitions sitting in the seats of the Colosseum.
